Cricket Bat Size Guide
Nine sizes, from size 1 to Long Handle, and for each of them the four measurements that decide whether a bat suits a player: how long it is, how much of that is blade, how much is handle, and what it weighs. Measure a height, find the row, and the bat is on the same line.
Take the measurement first
Player height
From the floor to the top of the head, in inches.
Shoes off, heels together against a wall, standing tall with the head level. Mark the wall at the top of the head and measure to the floor. For a child, measure again every few months — this is the number that changes.
Between two sizes: Take the smaller size. A bat one size too long teaches a bottom-hand grip that takes a season to undo.
Put in a height. Get the bat size.
It answers in a sentence. Give it a foot length, a palm or a head circumference as well and it sizes the shoe, the glove and the helmet too — and where it has not been given enough, it says which measurement it still needs rather than guessing at it.

Bands are set in whole inches and every inch belongs to exactly one size — no gaps, no overlaps. The centimetre figures are conversions of those inch boundaries; where a measurement lands on a boundary, the inch figure decides. The shelf links beside each size open that shelf already filtered to it, so you land on the bats in your size rather than on the whole range. The blade length is the overall length with the handle taken off it, so the three always reconcile.

- A Heega Size 2 is 27.5 in long overall — an 18 in blade and a 9.5 in handle, 3.50 – 3.60 in across the face, weighing 730 – 780 g. It suits a player 4 ft 3 in to 4 ft 5 in tall (130 cm to 136 cm).

The ten-second test, before you buy anything
Hold the bat straight out in front of you, one hand on the handle, arm level, for ten seconds. If the toe drops before you get there, the bat is too heavy — go down a size.
Height picks the size and this test is what overrules it. If the two disagree, the bat in your hands wins.
Why it overrules, and what dropping a size costs in reach
A player who cannot hold a bat level cannot pick it up through the line of the ball either. It shows up first as a bottom-hand grip and a cramped swing, and those take a season to undo.

A lighter bat in the right size beats a heavier bat in the next one up. Pickup decides, not the number on the scale. Size 1 is the smallest bat we make, at 550 – 620 g, so there is nothing below it — if that is still too heavy for a young player, talk to us and we will build one lighter.

- A Heega Size 3 weighs 800 – 850 g. Hold it straight out in front of you, one hand, arm level, for ten seconds — if the toe drops before you get there, go down a size. Going down to a Size 2 costs 1 in of reach and saves about 70 g.

Everyone publishes one number. A bat has four.
A size on its own tells you almost nothing. Four measurements decide whether a bat suits a player, and they answer four different questions — so all four are on this page, for every size we make.
What each of the four answers, and who else publishes them
You do not have to take our word for which size suits: the two halves are here side by side, so you can lay your own number against ours and choose.

A couple of makers do publish a blade and a handle — GM state both, and Kookaburra's Australian guide gives enough to work a blade out. What you will not find elsewhere is a weight for every size, which is the measurement that decides whether a player can actually use the bat. Ours are measured on our own bench in Meerut and published in inches, for all nine sizes.

The first step is the big one: a Size 2 is +29% on a Size 1. Every step after it adds between 2% and 12%, which is why sizing up by one is usually manageable and sizing up by two rarely is.
The rule
- Size up only when a player is at the top of their band, never by two sizes, and let weight decide: a bat that is too long or too heavy teaches a bottom-hand grip and a cramped swing that take a season to undo.
Why a junior bat is not just a short oneThe handle is the same share of the bat at every sizeA Heega junior is the adult bat scaled down, not cut short: the handle is between 33% and 36% of the overall length at every size.
Across all nine sizes the handle is between 33% and 36% of the bat's overall length. A Heega junior is the adult bat scaled down, not an adult bat cut short — so the grip an aspiring cricketer learns at nine is the grip they keep at twenty, and moving up a size changes the reach without changing the feel.

Worth knowing
- A Short Handle and a Long Handle share the same 22 in blade. The whole difference between them is handle — 11.5 in against 12.25 in — so a Long Handle is not a bigger hitting surface, it is the same one carried higher to suit a taller stance.

The question everyone asksWhat size bat for a ten-year-old?Two makers' own age charts put an aspiring cricketer of 10 on a Size 3 and on a Size 6 — 3 in apart. Height is the number that needs no interpreting.
For an aspiring cricketer of 10, we would usually suggest a Size 6 — as a starting point.
Bats are chosen on height, not age — two aspiring cricketers of the same age can be four inches apart, and the bat follows the inches. Measure against a wall, shoes off, and read the height off the ladder above.

Age is only a way in. Two 12-year-olds can be four inches apart, and it is height that decides the size. Where our band deliberately sits higher than the published trade bands — Harrow and above — we give no age at all rather than a misleading one.
Why we ask for a height rather than an age
Age is a proxy for height, and a loose one. Two makers publishing their own age charts can read the same age differently and both be reasonable about it, which is the plainest reason to take the height instead — it is the one number that does not need interpreting.
Look at height instead and the trade lines up. Kookaburra (UK) give Size 2, Size 3, Size 4, Size 5 and Size 6 the identical centimetre bands we do.
GM and Gray-Nicolls publish a ladder identical to each other's, across Size 2, Size 3, Size 4, Size 5 and Size 6 — a centimetre or two off ours at the top of the junior range.
Every chart here agrees exactly on Size 3. Height is the measurement the trade converges on, which is exactly why it is the one we ask for.
Our Short Handle starts at 5'9", which is where GM, Gray-Nicolls and Kookaburra's UK guide each start their full adult size. SG start theirs at 5'6", so if you have been sized on an SG chart you may find our Harrow is the better fit — it covers 5'5" to 5'8".

Read across the row for an aspiring cricketer of 10
- SG's chart puts 10 in their 9 – 12 band, which is a Size 6.
- Gray-Nicolls' chart puts 10 in their 9 – 11 band, which is a Size 3.
Follow one and you have a Size 3; follow the other and you have a Size 6. Those are 3 in apart and about 230 g apart — two quite different bats for the same aspiring cricketer. Neither chart is careless. Age is simply a loose way of guessing a height, and the height is the thing you can actually measure in a minute.

The Women's bat is a pattern, not a step on the height ladder. It takes a Harrow's length and a Harrow's handle at our full adult blade width — the full hitting surface of a Short Handle on a shorter, easier-to-swing bat. It sits alongside the ladder rather than in place of a rung on it, so a player of Harrow height can take either.

They sit outside the Laws of Cricket, which cap a bat at 38 inches long and 4.25 inches wide, so they are for social cricket rather than a league or a recognised tournament. If you play both, keep one of these for the office match and a Law-size bat for the season.

The inch figures are the Law's own; the millimetres in brackets are conversions of them. The edge's 4 cm is the Law's own second statement of the same limit rather than a conversion.

What size cricket bat for a 12 year old?
For an aspiring cricketer of 12 we would usually suggest a size 6 as a starting point, but bats are chosen on height rather than age — two aspiring cricketers of 12 can be four inches apart, and the bat follows the inches.
